Features

Built for precise measurement

Each tool is designed to support reproducible research data — from pixel coordinates to physical dimensions, every step is traceable.

Three annotation modes

Point coordinates, distance (line segment), and angle (three points) cover common measurement needs with seamless switching.

PointDistanceAngle

Ruler calibration

Ctrl + drag to draw a calibration line of known length, then enter its real-world size — image coordinates convert instantly to physical units.

Ctrl + Dragμm / nm / mm

Real-time magnifier

A magnifying loupe follows the cursor to keep edge pixels clearly visible, aiding sub-pixel positioning.

Multiple format support

PNG, JPG, BMP images and MP4, AVI video are all handled in one interface — no conversion needed.

Import / export data

Export annotations to JSON or Excel with one click, or import existing data to continue working seamlessly.

Full video support

Frame-by-frame control with synced annotation logging lets you quantify motion and structural change over time.

Workflow

Four steps to a measurement

From opening an image to exporting data, one walkthrough is enough to get started.

01

Open an image / video

Drag a file into the window or open from the menu — common research formats are supported.

02

Calibrate the ruler

Ctrl + drag to draw a calibration line of known length, then enter its true physical size.

03

Add annotations

Combine point, distance, and angle modes as needed, using the real-time magnifier for precise positioning.

04

Export data

Export annotations and measurements as JSON or Excel and bring them straight into your analysis pipeline.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Which operating systems does MolFocus support?
The current release is built for Windows 10 / 11 64-bit. The installer includes all runtime dependencies — no separate Python installation is required.
What is the license dialog that appears on first launch?
This is the copyright license confirmation. You must check "I agree to the above terms and conditions" and click Accept to use the software; clicking Decline will exit. This is a required step.
How do I ensure physical measurement accuracy?
Use ruler calibration: hold Ctrl and drag to draw a calibration line of known physical length on the image, then enter its true size. All measurements will be scaled accordingly. Calibrate separately for each magnification level.
What formats are supported for data export?
You can export annotations as JSON or Excel, making it easy to continue analysis in Python, Origin, or other tools. You can also import existing data files to resume annotation work.
How can I report an issue or suggest a feature?
Please send an email to [email protected] with a description of the issue, software version, and steps to reproduce. The author will respond as soon as possible.
